Prosecutors: Sex offender used Web to meet child victim’s mother

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A convicted sexual predator raped the 6-year-old daughter of a woman he met through the popular social networking Web site MySpace.com, prosecutors said.
Michael Kairis pleaded guilty Monday to rape and gross sexual imposition in a deal with the Franklin County prosecutor’s office, which agreed not to seek a life sentence so the girl could avoid testifying in court.
Kairis, 33, of Columbus, faces up to 11 1/2 in prison at sentencing July 11.
Common Pleas Judge John Bessey rejected a request Monday from defense attorney Timothy Pierce to release Kairis from the county jail and place him on house arrest until sentencing so he could care for sick relatives and spend time with his new wife.
Brant Cook, an assistant county prosecutor, said Kairis met the girl’s mother in August after he contacted the woman online and set up a date. The woman’s Web page mentioned she had a daughter, Cook said.
Kairis was convicted of gross sexual imposition and labeled a sexual predator in August 2000 after he pleaded guilty to molesting an 8-year-old relative. He was paroled in 2003.
